Why We Started Kentucky Overland Adventures

The story behind Kentucky Overland Adventures and why we’re documenting our journey into overlanding, one trail at a time.

We didn’t start this to be influencers. We started it because we love getting out there.

Our Why:

Overlanding gave us something different.

Less noise.

More connection.

More time outside.

It’s not about having the best rig — it’s about going.

Where It Started:

Weekends turned into trail rides.

Trail rides turned into trips.

Trips turned into something we didn’t want to keep to ourselves.

What We’re Building:

We want to document the journey.

The good trips.

The mistakes.

The learning process.

All of it.

What You Can Expect:

  • Trail guides (especially Kentucky)

  • Gear setups

  • Real beginner-friendly content

  • Honest experiences

If you’re just getting started — you’re in the right place.

👉 As we adventure, we discover.

You don’t realize how important this is until night hits.

👉 Must-haves:

  • Headlamp

  • Lantern

  • Portable battery

4. Food & Water Setup

No need to go crazy.

Beginner mistakes to avoid when overlanding

Avoid the most common beginner overloading mistakes and hit the trail with confidence, preparation, and the right mindset.

Everyone makes mistakes starting out — that’s part of it. But a few common ones can ruin your trip fast if you’re not prepared.

1. Overpacking

You don’t need everything.

More gear = more weight + more stress.

2. No Recovery Plan

If you get stuck and don’t have gear…

You’re relying on someone else.

👉 Always have:

  • Tow strap

  • Shackles

  • Basic recovery knowledge

3. Ignoring Weather

Rain changes everything.

Easy trails become problems quick.

👉 Always check conditions before heading out.

4. Poor Communication

No service = no help

👉 Bring:

  • Offline maps

  • Downloaded trail routes

5. Not Testing Your Setup

First time using gear should NOT be on the trail.

👉 Set it up at home first.

Keep it simple, stay prepared, and you’ll learn fast. Every trip makes you better.
